Got Questions?

Here are a number of frequently-asked questions that we get:

How much personal time will it take?

In addition to weekly rehearsals throughout the year, we ask that each member spend a minimum of an hour a day in home practice on average. There are 2 annual shows - one in Spring and one in the Fall. We also participate in Barbershop Harmony Society regional competitions in March or April and also in October each year and, if we qualify, we also compete at the Society’s International contest in July. We have an annual weekend retreat to focus on preparing for competition. We tend to perform in and around our area about 2-4 times per year for local festivals, business events, charitable events, as well as participating in Christmas and arts festival events.

What is the cost?

There are two ways to answer his question: We can just give you a number and you can base your decision on whether it is important enough to spend the money or you could really look in to this question adn understand the benefits that come with the costs. As a thinking person and a person that really wants to know the value, let us present you with this equation V = E+Q/C. I found a wonderful article that can answer the value question, Please click here.

What is the audition procedure?

VoCal strives to provide outstanding musical entertainment for our audiences. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere wherein each member is able to achieve his full potential as a performer. We have reasonably high standards for performance membership in the chorus and provide programs for continuing training of members in all aspects of musical performance through the use of both internal and external coaching. Our goal is to increase membership without sacrificing quality. We accomplish this through our qualification process and offer encouragement and assistance to any candidate who does not immediately meet our performance requirements but demonstrates moderate skills and a desire to improve.

You may start the membership process as early as your third rehearsal. The overall membership process consists of three steps:

1) Interview
2) Vocal Qualification
3) VoCal Board Approval

In greater detail these three steps are:

1) Interview - a short discussion intended to ensure that we understand
what you are looking for in joining VoCal; and that you understand what
will be expected of you when you join us.

2) Vocal Qualification – this process consists of one to three steps:

a. Vocal Placement - VoCal music leader assesses what part may be best for you
b. Vocal Quality and Skills Evaluation - VoCal music leader guides you through several skill assessments and provides feedback
c. Optional Extended Evaluation - depending on the result of the Quality and Skills Evaluation, you may be asked to sing a portion of a chorus song in a quartet.

3) VoCal Board Approval – the Chapter Board of Directors will consider
your application once these steps have been completed satisfactorily
and all required membership application forms have been received.

How do I learn the songs?

We provide learning tracks in mp3 format for your part on any song. You will be able to get the music sheets and the learning track for your part from the members' website. You will be able to learn your part at home at your own pace. We also have documents to help you in your learning process. We want you to succeed in this hobby and we will do everything to provide you the best learning environment.
